here's an insect, almost 1.5" long, found in my garden today. my brother says it's an eyed elater, a giant click beetle, the largest click beetle in north and south america! (this was scanned on a piece of birch bark.)

So shall we all go out and smash them if we see them?
ha ha. once my brother identified the beetle, i checked google and learned that the adult beetles eat little, if anything. the larvae eat corn and other crops and can be a problem. i'm not too worried since i don't grow corn and have never seen this beetle before.
i released the smiling beetle back into my garden. gf
