EASTERN SCREECH OWL (RED MORPH)

yesterday a crowd gathered at my dau's school... there was an eastern screech owl (red morph) in the holly! thanks to dau for this pic... the owl is all fluffy due to the cold that day...

today the owl was still on the same branch, so i was able to photograph (5pm)...
i'm afraid the owl did not like the flash very much...

see the owl in the holly at left? this shot shows how tiny it is, and how even at 5pm a little crowd was gathered.
everyone is wondering whether this owl is ok... time will tell. (update... the owl is not there today, thursday...)

Wow, Em, what great pics! How lucky to see the little owl. Your daughter did a great job with her pic. Maybe a chip off the old block? ;)
The little guy looks really bewildered by the flash :)
I hope its OK, wherever it went. Sure was a nice opportunity for everyone to observe it for a couple of days.

I am a principal at an elementary school. today about 2:30 I was called outside because of a loud crowd of middle school students. When I got there, they were so excited! They had spotted 4 of the Red Morph Eastern Screech owls in a dogwood tree right up against our building. We had an adult and 3 immature ones, who had apparently been learning to fly. there is a maple tree nearby with lots of broken off limbs and probably full of nesting holes that we suspect the owls came from. We brought all our students out very quietly to see them and many stayed after the 3:00 dismissal bell just watch them sit in the tree. What an experience for our students and for me too!
