SUMMER TRANSITION
happy summer! in the north eastern us, the transition from spring to summer means that spring flowers fade, but summer flowers are not yet blooming. the garden is filled with promise.

CLEMATIS VITICELLA
my brother and i find that viticella are the most relible clematis for the north east. 'etoile violet' is just beginning to bloom.to brighten up this post, here is campanula 'elizabeth,' lit by afternoon sun, beautiful but invasive. i use aluminum cladding buried underground to contain her.
clematis viticella venosa violacea. i have three other viticellas, purpurea plena, roguchi and minuet, which is really spectacular. pictures to follow.

VASCO'S FIRST SWIM
vasco, my mother's portuguese water dog puppy (1 yr), came to visit and had his first swim! here's my best shot of the day... and here he is swimming and smiling at joe joe, my poodle, like he's been doing it for years!
tussling over a stick. eventually luna the whippet stole the stick, and the boys chased her. (note attractive duckweed on poodle tail)
as you can imagine, everyone got soaked, even mom and me!

JUNE BLOOMERS
our unseasonably hot weather is shortening the bloom time of some june flowers... kalmia 'carol' was just opening this week and is finished blooming now.magnolia sieboldii colossus continues to bloom and bloom and bloom with pristine pendulant, beery-smelling flowers.
perennial snapdragons love the hot weather.
nothing stops rose 'heritage!'
these campanula flowers wilted rapidly in the heat.
the heat won't kill this opportunistic grass sprouting from a brick!
variegated bishop weed happily flowering...
this happy pairing is a rose reverted to rootstock and kalmia 'pinwheel.' pinwheel's flowers are brown today, but the rose continues to flourish.
i'll have pictures of the clematis, just flowering, over the weekend!

SCIADOPITYS & DEUTZIA LOVE AFFAIR
what is it? not one plant, but two! my bicolor deutzia is having a love affair with my japanese umbrella pine! scandalous!and, this is all happening by the garden gate, where the neighbors can see!
when i planted the sciadopitys 10 years ago, it was a foot tall, now it tops 5 feet (the fence is 4 feet.) and the deutzia lovingly embraces it from the other side of the fence.
this photo shows the deutzia's true color, unlike the photo at top, which makes it look more purple than it is.

FROLIC IN SUGAR POND
we are having august weather in june, so i walked the dogs through the woods to sugar pond, so they could take a dip...luna, the whippet, does not like to swim, but she goes in chest deep and splashes around to get wet...
joe joe, our poodle, loves to retrieve...
and then gives us all a shower when he gets out of the water.
species roses are blooming so heavily that our woods smell of them throughout. the rose below is about 15 feet tall.
