oh, that is a seed pod from geum prairie smoke. the flower has unremarkable reddish flowers and terrific, long, hair-like stamens that stay on the pod after the petals drop off. the effect of several of them is smoke-like, hence the name.
unfortunately, my geums died off last year. i think they like sandier soils than i have.
I like this one best, especially the exotic spkiy thing in the upper right corner.
